This article assumes basic familiarity with Hadoop. Hadoop Map Reduce Overview

In 2004, Google published a number of white papers on how they were able to maintain and process the index of the World Wide Web. They describe the fundamental shift in data processing as having used a cluster of the machines to process the same data. Instead of sending data to a node for processing, the processing code was sent to a data for processing. This was achieved by creating a distributed file system – the Google File System (GFS) – and the processing framework – Map/Reduce. Those white papers were the inspiration for Doug Cutting, then working with Yahoo!, to create Hadoop, the open source equivalent of Google’s distributed data system.

Their effort to build Nutch web crawler lead to the creation of Hadoop which is now one of the biggest and popular framework in distributed computing sphere.
