Hadoop on Azure – A Developer’s Guide
by Lynn Langit
Given the increasing interest in using Hadoop to process very large data sets, this article covers one possibility for implementation – Hadoop on Windows Azure. This article assumes basic familiarity with Hadoop. If you are new to Hadoop, we recommend that you first read this reference for getting a core understanding of basic data storage, processing and query concepts using a Hadoop data store (http://hadoop.apache.org/ – URL).
Hadoop Map Reduce Overview
by Serge Blazhiyevskyy
In 2004, Google published a number of white papers on how they were able to maintain and process the index of the World Wide Web. They describe the fundamental shift in data processing as having used a cluster of the machines to process the same data. Instead of sending data to a node for processing, the processing code was sent to a data for processing. This was achieved by creating a distributed file system – the Google File System (GFS) – and the processing framework – Map/Reduce. Those white papers were the inspiration for Doug Cutting, then working with Yahoo!, to create Hadoop, the open source equivalent of Google’s distributed data system.
Hadoop@Facebook – A case study on how Facebook leverages Hadoop
by Tejas Patil
About a decade back, Doug Cutting and team, who were on a mission to build an open source web search engine, might not have realised that what they were doing would have changed the future of software industry. Their effort to build Nutch web crawler lead to the creation of Hadoop which is now one of the biggest and popular framework in distributed computing sphere. Hadoop is used extensively at many software giants including Facebook, Google, IBM, Yahoo. (For a comprehensive list see http://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/PoweredBy). In this article I will mainly talk about how Hadoop is leveraged at Facebook.
Hadoop as a Service
by Tanmay Deshpande
We are staying in the world where “Everything as a Service” is being sold. Initially it started with Infrastructure, Platform and Software. These three words used to make the definition of Cloud Computing. Till 2011, if you would have asked a cloud expert, even he would have said the same. But suddenly it seems that Cloud has started spreading its wings. McAfee launched its Security-as-a-Service, MongoDB launched Mongo Lab, which is Database-as-a-Service and now it’s time for Hadoop-as-a-Service.
Mobile Inertia in Business IT. Why Your Business Needs a Mobile IT Strategy?
by Greg Hrebek
Executives and upper level management celebrated the dawn of the smart phone. Most formed a hated addiction with their mobile devices as they could never escape work yet had an unquenchable thirst for the sense of control it brought. The productivity and free labor gains are undeniable, promoting an always-engaged worker beyond the office walls. IT departments worked vigorously to secure these channels as they began to poke holes i their firewalls. Research in Motion’s (RIM) Blackberry platform became the go to solution for many as the infrastructure was familar to what was already being used to manage their landline networks.
Efficient Cross – Platform Development: Real – Time Video Processing
by Francesco Montorsi
Applications capable of running on many different types of hardware and software environments are usually called “cross-platform”. In the context of this article “cross-platform code” means source code written with a programming language and tools (e.g. libraries) abstracting from the Operating System and the underlying hardware; cross-platform code thus can be compiled&executed or interpreted without any change on e.g. a Windows PC or a Linux workstation.
Generic Programming with the Variadic Template
by Filip Janiszewski
This paper is an advanced introduction to the variadic templates; we will see how to use them implementing a homemade tuple container, the version presented here lacks of some important characteristics and behaviors but is complete enough to see the potential of the variadic templates as a generic programming tool.
The New Paradigm: Cloud Services, Cloud Tools
by Max Katz
In the past year or so, we have witnessed what amounts to a new shift from client-server to client-cloud. This shift primarily being fueled by mobile devices exceeding desktop computers and thousands of different API available on the Internet today. What started in early 2000 by eBay and Amazon has fueled into a real revolution in 2012 with thousands of companies, from Twitter and Facebook to AT&T offering cloud-based services.
